Middlefield VFW Wants You
By Colleen Lockhart
Calling all service members in the NE Ohio communities of Middlefield, Parkman, and Huntsburg who want to enjoy the privileges of the VFW, a non-profit service organization for USA military veterans. The mission of the VFW is "to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts; To serve our veterans, the military and our communities; To advocate on behalf of all veterans”.
The core values of the VFW are to "Always put the interests of our members first, treat donors as partners in our cause, promote patriotism, honor military service, ensure the care of veterans and their families, serve our communities, promote a positive image of the VFW and respect the diversity of veteran opinions.” Middlefield VFW Post #9678 has a long history of serving our community. They participate in patriotic events. Every Memorial Day, they lead the parades and ceremonies in Parkman, Huntsburg and Middlefield and offer a community picnic after the parade in Middlefield. The VFW recently purchased body cameras for the Middlefield Police Department and supported the Fill-a-Cruiser campaign. As part of their youth and education programs, they sponsor the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen and the Jr. Buckeye Boys state project in the Cardinal School District, with this year’s recipient Jake Chilson. Currently, they will be offering a free Fitness 101 class for the community starting again in September, as well as a Casino bus trip in August to benefit veteran Thomas Stehlik. In the planning stages is a self-defense class for women and a benefit steak fry.
According to Post Commander Jeff Gardner, they are continuously recruiting new members. "We pay for the first year a Veteran joins us. After the first year if that new member gets involved and helps the club, we may pay for their life membership. In addition, guest members are very important to the well-being of this club. They help with the benefit dinners and picnics. Without them we would not be able to accomplish all those projects.” The guest members do not have to have been in the military to join. Also veterans who do not have a campaign / service ribbon (served in a war/conflictzone) can also become guest members.
Again they enjoy all the benefits we have at the club with the exception of voting at meetings. Post #9678 is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. until 1 a.m. and on Saturday from noon until 8 p.m. Members have exclusive privileges to use the electronic gaming machines, purchase beverages at a member price, buy raffle tickets and have access to the facility.
